経歴
１９３６年、ニューヨーク州に生まれる。ハワード大学などに学ぶ。その後、カレッジや大学で教鞭をとるいっぽう、７０年代から児童書の世界で詩人、作家として活躍。詩や小説で数々の賞を受賞。ピューリッツァー賞の詩の部門で最終候補に残った作品もある。代表作にエヴァレット・アンダーソンを主人公にした詩の絵本のシリーズなどがある。
